Today, where every moment is captured with a click, the artistry behind the lens often goes unnoticed. We sat down with Kevin Fides, a photographer whose images do more than just capture moments—they give a deeper, authentic look into life. With a career spanning over eight years and a portfolio that ranges from architecture to portraits, Kevin has mastered the art of visual storytelling. In our interview, we delve into the inspirations, techniques, and philosophies that shape his expressive photos.

First immersing himself in photography eight years ago, Kevin developed a style that captures raw stories and emotions. His work blends editorial and narrative structure with moody and atmospheric elements, with striking colors and subjects a key flare. Kevin doesn’t just press click—he creates vivid scenes that make people think and feel.

Kevin is self-taught, recounting: “The moment I discovered photography, I was hooked…I was more so present in the experience because I enjoyed it very much.” He continues, “...I was dedicated to learning all aspects of photography.” This devoted approach developed an equally impassioned style quickly. When asked what first drew him in, Kevin explains “From an early age, I was the one capturing family photos…[And] hanging out with my friends Saffa, Marwa, and Bhargav, I noticed they photographed everything…that’s when my passion ignited.” Photography has become an extension of who Kevin is today.

Looking at Kevin’s portfolio as this extension of him, the work always contains an introspective feel. This colorful, moody style that plays with both light and depth evolved gracefully over time, reflecting different stages of Kevin’s life. A pivotal moment for Kevin came with his first returning client: “Michael. He believed in me and gave me the opportunity to shoot a campaign for his company, Fort Worth Historical. He…showed me how something great can come from working with a team.” This not only boosted Kevin’s confidence, but highlighted the importance of community within creativity.

Kevin has faced significant mental health challenges throughout his journey, most rooted in 2020. These hurdles affected his consistency, but couldn’t derail his passion. A major turning point came in 2023 when Kevin moved to Arizona—alone. “I started to look at my life differently and I started to see life beautifully again. I'm…still able to apply my photography as a tool to alchemize tough moments in my life.” This courageous move provided Kevin a fresh perspective and renewed appreciation, and his inspiration continues to be driven by his community: “My friends always uplift me and help me get through my mental funks…” Surrounding himself with uplifting people is a crucial part of staying sane. Oftentimes, the hardest things are the ones that push us to grow the most.

To Kevin, the hardest part about being a photographer is navigating the business side; managing the administrative aspects of a photography career is noticeably less glamorous than the work itself. Despite these hurdles, the joy of creating remains the most rewarding part of the job. Kevin states, “The best part of being a photographer is the act of creating.” The satisfaction of seeing his vision come to life and connecting with his audience is what keeps Kevin motivated.

Genuine storytelling is a steadfast component of Kevin’s work. He believes in capturing a compelling narrative to truly engage viewers, and always focuses on creating a natural, relaxed environment, asking personal questions and avoiding forced poses. “The image will always tell its own story to many different people, in many different ways.” Looking to the future, Kevin is excited about the possibility of new projects continuing this authenticity. His dream project would involve immersion in a remote village, documenting the lives and culture, reflecting his ongoing commitment to capturing diverse stories.

For those interested in photography, Kevin Fides offers truly valuable advice: “Just start…Focus on what you have and don't compare yourself…your own perspective is always unique and beautiful.” And, as he continues to evolve, Kevin acutely shows how passion and hard work can lead to amazing results. With exciting future projects on the horizon and a clear drive to capture diverse stories, it will be exciting to see how his work continues to progress. Stay true to your passion, embrace your unique perspective, and like Kevin, just go for it.
